How numerology works

Numerology reduces your date of birth and your name to single numbers, each linked to a planet. Indian numerology reads three of them together, plus a grid of the digits in your birth date.

Your three core numbers

Moolank: your birth number

Add the digits of the day you were born until you reach a single digit. Someone born on the 14th has a Moolank of 1 + 4 = 5. It describes your everyday personality and instincts, and it's the number most people recognise themselves in first.

Bhagyank: your destiny number

Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce it to a single digit. It shows the direction your life tends to move in and the lessons that keep returning, which is why it's also called the life path number.

Naamank: your name number

Each letter of your name has a value. Add them all for a compound number, then reduce it. In India the Chaldean system is the most widely used. Notice that it has no 9: in this tradition 9 is considered sacred and isn't assigned to letters.

A worked example

Take Ananya Rao, born 14 November 1995.

Her Moolank 5 and Bhagyank 4 are both friendly with 6, so numerologists would say her name supports her well. When a name number clashes with both core numbers, people sometimes adjust the spelling, such as adding a letter, to bring them into harmony.

The Lo Shu grid

The Lo Shu grid is a 3 × 3 magic square in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. You place each digit of your birth date in its square, usually adding your Moolank and Bhagyank too. Repeated numbers show strengths; empty squares show qualities you may need to develop consciously.

For Ananya, the digits 1, 4, 1, 1, 1, 9, 9, 5 plus her Moolank 5 and Bhagyank 4 leave 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 empty. A reader would note strong expression (four 1s) and suggest consciously building patience and intuition, the qualities linked to the missing 2 and 7.
