Is it really "100% Manglik"? What I look at before calling Kuja dosha
Most charts have Mars in a "Manglik house" from somewhere. Here is how I judge whether Kuja dosha is real, mild or cancelled, and why Venus matters as much as Mars.
Few words cause as much worry in a family as "Manglik". I have met many parents who were told by one pandit that their daughter is "100% Manglik", and by another that there is no dosha at all. Both cannot be right, and very often both have looked at too little of the chart.
Why so many people are called Manglik
The usual rule says Kuja dosha forms when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. That is six houses out of twelve, so half of all charts qualify from the lagna alone. Count the same houses from the Moon and from Venus too, as many people do, and almost nobody escapes. A rule that catches nearly everyone cannot be the whole story.
What Mars does in each of these houses
- 2nd house: sharp, direct speech and quarrels over money or family matters.
- 4th house: restlessness at home and friction around property or the mother.
- 7th house: a strong-willed partner and arguments when egos clash.
- 8th house: sudden ups and downs, and health matters that need care.
- 12th house: expenses, disturbed sleep and distance between partners.
- 1st house: a quick temper and impatience that the partner feels first.
These are tendencies of temperament, not a sentence on a marriage. They tell a couple where to be careful.
What I check before calling it a dosha
- The strength and sign of Mars. Mars in its own sign (Mesha, Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara) behaves very differently from a weak, troubled Mars.
- Jupiter's glance. When Jupiter aspects Mars or the 7th house, the harshness softens a great deal.
- Venus, the karaka of marriage. This is the part most often missed. If Venus is with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, or badly placed, married life can suffer even when Mars is fine. Blaming Mars alone in such a chart is a wrong reading.
- The 7th house and its lord. A strong 7th lord in a good house protects the marriage.
- Both charts together. When both partners carry a similar Mars, the old texts treat the dosha as balanced.
- The running dasha. Mars gives its results most strongly in its own periods and those of the planets linked to it.
My advice to families
Do not reject a good match because of one word. Ask your astrologer which house, which sign, what aspects, and what Venus is doing. If the answer is only "Mars is in the 8th", ask for a fuller reading. Where the dosha is genuinely strong, simple remedies such as Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, patience in speech and the traditional Kumbh vivah practice help, but understanding each other's nature helps most.
