Fate or free will? What your kundli can and cannot tell you
A kundli shows the river you are born into, not how well you row. My thoughts on prarabdha karma, effort, and how to use your chart without becoming fatalistic.
"If everything is written, why should I try?" I hear this question in many forms. My answer is that the kundli and our effort are not opposites. They work together, and astrology is most useful to people who understand this.
The river and the boat
Think of your life as a boat on a river. The river's direction and speed are your prarabdha karma, the part of past karma that is ripening in this life. Your kundli maps that river: where it runs fast, where it bends, where there are rocks. But you still hold the oars. Two people on the same river reach very different places depending on how well they row and where they choose to steer.
Where fate and effort meet
Every action passes through four stages: a thought, a desire, the action, and the result. Our tendencies and desires are coloured by past karma, and that is what the chart describes. The result is not fully in our hands; that is the teaching of the Gita on doing one's duty without clinging to the fruit. The action in the middle is ours. That is where effort lives, and it is where a kundli helps the most.
Do not stop at the first boundary
Many people decide too early that they have reached the limit of their luck. They try once, meet resistance, and say "this is all that is written for me". Very often the real limit is much further away. We only discover how much is meant for us after we have truly stretched for it.
Good effort also needs the right ground
Sometimes a sincere person fails because the timing or place is wrong, like a fine dancer asked to perform on sand. A difficult dasha or transit is that sand. The chart helps you see when the ground is firm, so you can save your biggest moves for those periods and use the harder ones to prepare.
How to use your kundli well
- Understand it. Learn your nature from it honestly, including the weaknesses your mind would rather not see.
- Accept it. Do not compare your chart with anyone else's. It is yours, the way a parent owns a child with all its qualities.
- Work on one challenge at a time. If the chart shows a quick temper or careless driving, pick that one and practise its opposite for months.
- Time your efforts. Use your dasha and transits to choose when to push and when to consolidate.
The planets incline us; they do not compel us. See your own dasha periods and what they favour in a free reading, or the full timeline in the Mahadasha & Antardasha Report.
