Moolank and Bhagyank: how to find your two most important numbers
A simple guide to calculating your Moolank (root number) and Bhagyank (destiny number) from your date of birth, with an example.
In Indian numerology, two numbers come straight from your date of birth: Moolank (root or psychic number) and Bhagyank (destiny or life path number). Together they describe how you see yourself and where life tends to take you.
Moolank: add the day of birth
Take only the day you were born and add the digits until you get a single number from 1 to 9.
- Born on the 7th: Moolank 7.
- Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5.
- Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
Bhagyank: add the full date
Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce it to a single number.
Example: 15 August 1990 → 1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33 → 3 + 3 = 6.
What each number is linked to
- 1 – Sun: leadership, independence.
- 2 – Moon: sensitivity, partnership.
- 3 – Jupiter: wisdom, teaching, growth.
- 4 – Rahu: unconventional thinking, sudden change.
- 5 – Mercury: communication, business, adaptability.

Your name number matters too
Your name number (Naamank) works best when it is friendly with your Moolank and Bhagyank. If it isn't, many people make a small change to the spelling of their name.
